Grand Junction is located on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains in some of the most diverse country in the West. Skiing, golf, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, and of course, trail riding are all within an hour of the Desert Star. Our location, in Whitewater, Colorado, is just ten minutes from downtown shopping, sculptures, and fine restaurants.

The Desert Star was built in 1890 and faced demolition in the late 1990s. The host/owner moved the house to a new site and began the long task of gutting and remodeling. Geothermal heating and air conditioning make the house comfortable and energy efficient.

The house is open and bright with scenic views in all directions. The décor is a combination of southwest and European design. Two large guest rooms, each with private full baths featuring Jacuzzi tubs, are accessed by a spiral staircase. One room has a queen bed and the other has a queen and a twin bed.

The host has an extensive food and beverage background and offers a hearty gourmet breakfast, organic and preservative-free, with fresh baked goods and fresh fruit in season. Special diets can be accommodated upon request. Breakfast time is very flexible. During hunting season, extra-early breakfast and packed lunches can be arranged.

Approximately four miles west—towards Grand Junction—is the beautiful Chipeta Golf Course with 18 holes, picturesque views, clubhouse, and 2 tennis courts. Check out their website: http://www.chipetagolf.com.

One mile from our door are the Gunnison Bluffs and Old Spanish Trails, perhaps the most underutilized bike and hiking trails in the Grand Valley.

Another attraction also a mile away, is the Gunnison River—a gentle, scenic river suitable for activities by all ages and abilitiy levels. Self-guided floats are offered by Catfish Canoe Co. (http://www.catfishcanoe.com).

The current stabling facility consists of a four-stall pole barn with runs. A large parking area and turn-around make for easy access, even for large rigs.

Trail riding is virtually a year-round activity in the Grand Valley. Non-motorized BLM land is accessible behind our property. Temperatures can be high in mid-summer, so we recommend the high mountain trails on the Grand Mesa, the world's largest flat-top mountain. In winter, spring, and fall, explore the red rock deserts and wild horse area. Trail rides of all distances and difficulties are within an hour's drive.

Don't own a horse? Rentals are available from Fred and Mandy Pint of Mt. Garfield Stables (970-242-4008) just six miles down the road. High-quality stock provide an enjoyable experience for all levels of riding skills.

There are two friendly dogs on the premises and, of course, horses. Guests may bring well-behaved dogs. Because of the spiral staircase, small children and physically-challenged people are not appropriate for this facility.

Rooms start at $85 per night plus tax.
